Classroom Conflict 6: Staying on Track with the Distressed Child

Classroom Conflict:  Dealing with verbal abuse, insulting or hurtful language.

When facing Classroom Conflict there is a way to stay on track in the face of very distressed behaviour.  If you have faced a distressed, upset, angry or frustrated child, then you will have had moments where your mettle has been truly tested.   They have said hurtful, wounding or emotionally shocking things and you’ve struggled to maintain your composure and your Showtime mindset (see our previous video about that).  In our method, we have a specific label for that moment and we have a category of strategies for you to apply called Redirections.

We redirect behaviour with words to navigate it towards a positive outcome through our considered responses and to keep it away from the sharp rocks of emotional hurt and natural reactions.   Because we should only use physical interventions for legally defensible reasons, you can’t afford to become emotionally distracted in the midst of a high-stakes interaction like this…
