The reality of knife crime is something schools cannot ignore. Staff need to recognise the signs that a pupil may be carrying a weapon, understand the risks, and know what to do — and what never to do — in a weapon-adjacent situation.
We are pleased to point school leaders, safeguarding leads and pastoral staff to an online course from our colleagues at Dynamis Training: Knife and Edged Weapon Awareness.
This is an awareness course, not a self-defence course. It is built for non-police frontline staff — including education — and it teaches judgement and safety, never operational techniques.
What it covers:
- Understanding the reality of edged-weapon violence in the UK, in a sober, evidence-led way.
- Recognising edged and offensive weapons — and how everyday objects can become weapons.
- The Golden Rule for non-police staff: do not engage when a weapon is present — withdrawal is the safe, professional decision.
- A clear tactical framework — increase distance, use barriers, prevent penetration.
- Scenario practice — rehearsing difficult moments, from a suspected weapon to discovering one during a search.
Who it is for: school staff and other education workers who may encounter blade-related situations, as part of a wider safeguarding approach. Around 45–60 minutes, self-paced online.
